Sh*tty First Draft Wisdom
I've been sharing đ© first draft wisdom this week with my storytelling clients, who like me, sometimes struggle with just.getting.started when they're writing copy or content.
Let me start by saying, thereâs a lot to be said for relaxing into a task rather than entering from a âhave to doâ space ⊠and nothing says relaxing more than letting your perfectionist, driven side know that the first words you write today or any day ..
No matter if theyâre a book, a social media post, sales page or just an email..
Can be âJUST THE SH*TTYđ© FIRST DRAFTâ.
Thereâs a lot to be said for relaxing into
a task rather than entering from a âhave to doâ space
⊠and nothing says relaxing more than letting your perfectionist, driven side know that the first words you write today ..
No matter if theyâre a book, a social media post, sales page or just an email..
Can be âJUST THE SH*TTY FIRST DRAFTâ aka SFD. Hereâs why đ
Even though Iâd spent more than two decades in communications and marketing / BD roles in corporate land ..
When I first started storytelling and creating content for private clients, I used to have book it in with a lead in time of at least an hour to even get started.
Before I actually put words to paper or fingers to keyboard, all the procrastination patterns came to the surface!
Weâre talking âŠ
Procrasti-coffee drinking
Procrasti-scrolling
Even Procrasti-cleaning
And underneath that⊠FEARS like âŠ
What if Iâm not really a good writer?
What if what sounds good on my head doesnât translate to on paper?
What if these stories donât connect, engage and relate in a way that translates to my clients audience?
What if the client hates it?
You know what solved this procrastination and fear? đš
Giving myself permission (encouraging myself even) to just get started and create the sh*tty first draft!
As soon as I made it ok for the words to be
Just the starting point, just something to read, edit and polish, I released the pressure and perfectionism
Â
And fear and procrastination were âpoof⊠đ„ goneâ!
And the natural results were âŠ
A) I had way more time in my day to go enjoy life sans fear and
B) I learnt to trust myself more and more because I didnât give the fears room to play and
C) I learnt over time that even the shittiest of shitty first drafts was a good start!
So next time youâre struggling to write or create content - no matter how hard it is -
give yourself permission to SFD too, and see what happens!!
Â
Â
Â
The truth is we ALL have a book baby inside of us. And you, my friend are no different.
And it's also true that MOST people who do actually birth a book baby have support to pull all those ideas / BS barriers / perceived gaps / lack of time or headspace into the light and access to community, coaching and accountability to enable them to address each of these barriers in turn - so they are FREE to deliver their unique message and medicine to the world.
That's exactly why for the first time ever, I'm sharing my failproof book birthing method "Creation Station" outside of my 1:1 Book Coaching Container in a very special LIVE ONE DAY event!
So you can transform Your IDEAS INTO IMPACT with A CREATIVITY-INFUSED, INTERACTIVE FUNSHOP ..and FINALLY be free to share your MESSAGE + MEDICINE with those who need it most!
